Progressive Rock Videos
Welcome to the Progressive Rock Music Videos and Lyrics site! Our aim is to present you
a selection of the best videos of good old progrock bands.
Most videos are live performances
of the songs. Some videos have good quality and some have lower, but they still express the
"spirit" of the best prog-rock times (mainly 1970's). With some videos you will also
find lyrics to the songs. Of course the whole site is free to watch - we don't own
these videos, we just select for you the best progressive rock videos available to the public
on youtube. We hope that especially if you are new to prog rock music, our site will
encourage you to explore this wonderful and one of the most creative parts of the music history.
Progressive rock (prog rock, progrock) is an ambitious and creative style of rock music.
It's beginnings were founded in the late 1960's, mainly in England, and
the time of the greatest popularity of the progressive rock was the first half of
the 1970's. Most of the progressive rock groups have already finished their
activity, however, there are some that are still playing or doing "reunion tours"
from time to time. The most important representatives of the style are bands from the
"big six" - Genesis, Yes, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Emerson Lake & Palmer (ELP) and
Jethro Tull. However, there were lots of other bands playing progrock.
It is very hard to define this kind of rock music, because it was a purpose of every progressive
rock band to create their own style, different from other bands. However, there are some main
characteristics that are common to most of the representants of the style. These are:
- long and complex compositions, sometimes lasting over 20 minutes;
- using unusual time signatures, scales and tunings; mixing various time signatures in one piece of music;
- poetic lyrics; some bands' lyrics were also politically engaged;
- use of many musical instruments - the standard set of bass, drums and guitars was
supplemented by electronic keybords (organs, mellotron, piano, etc.); many groups
used additional instruments like flute, violin, etc.;
- creating concept albums (one story or theme throughout the whole album);
- linking music with visual art; some bands were creating a kind of theatre shows during their concerts.
There were also some very popular rock bands (like The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Queen) that are
not known as prog rock bands, but they have in their discographies some songs that
are very close to the progressive rock music style.
