Progressive Rock Characteristics

Progressive rock is a style that developed some characteristic features common for most of the prog rock bands. Below we present the main characteristics of progressive rock music.

Form of the songs. Prog rock music avoided common popular music song structures like verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus. Music usually does not fit with such formal distinctions and extends sections or inserts musical interludes, often with changing dynamics and tempos, heightening contrast between the sections. Classical forms were often inserted or substituted, sometimes yielding entire suites. Progressive rock music also often extended instrumental passages which lasted long time. Musicians used to marry the classical solo tradition with the improvisational traditions of psychedelic rock or jazz. All of these tended to add length to progressive rock music songs. Some of these music pieces lasted longer than twenty minutes and were usually musical works that had a lot more in common with more established musical concepts than with a popular songs known from everyday radio programmes.

Harmony and melodies. In progressive rock there were many influences from jazz, classical music and blues. Melodies were more likely to be modal than based on the pentatonic scale, and comprised longer and developing in different directions passages. Musicians rather avoided short, catchy songs in favour of long complicated harmonies. Chord progressions were augmented with 6th, 7th, 9th, intervals etc. There were many direct quotes or allusions from classical themes. Some bands used atonal or dissonant harmonies, and some of them even worked with rudimentary serialism.

Rhythm. Drawing on their jazz, folk, classical and experimental influences, progressive rock musicianss were more likely to explore time signatures other than 4/4 and tempo changes. Often used signatures were for example: 3/4, 6/8, 7/8, 9/8 etc. Progressive rock generally tended to be more free and creative in its rhythmic approach than other forms of rock music. Some bands even used asymmetrical meters, more prevalent in Eastern music, such as 5/8 and 7/8 mixed in one music piece.
